Spring-Summer 2021 "Sneak Preview":

Learn and Preserve "The ORIGINAL Half-Halt" -- a Maximally Powerful, Reflex-Potent, "HIGH-SCHOOL" ADVANCED-TRAINING Method For ORIGINAL, Historically CORRECT Equestrian-Art Dressage!

"Perfection is simplicity." (Leonardo da Vinci)

Dear Visitor,

The best old-and-true books on ADVANCED CLASSICAL EQUITATION are either "written in a foreign language" or "currently out of print." To remedy this unnecessary, self-perpetuating lack of functionally indispensable information for every already advanced or seriously aspiring art-equestrian, our privately held International Nobility Foundation for the Preservation of the Original Equestrian Half-Halt has, since 1996, enjoyed the activity of gradually TRANSLATING and "E-PUBLISHING" EVERY HISTORICALLY AND FUNCTIONALLY SIGNIFICANT ANTIQUE BOOK MANUAL CAPTURING "THE ORIGINAL, ROYAL-BAROQUE EQUESTRIAN HALF-HALT" -- into maximally "true-to-the-source" English (cross-checked and finalized for factual accuracy by a world-recognized International Master of Olympic and Artistic Equitation), as well as into eight additional world languages, in multilingual "e-books" parallel.

Follows an initial-preview, narrative content sample, setting forth the approximate content focus of our first, 750-page "ORIGINAL HALF-HALT FOUNDATION BOOK" in this reference. This invaluable, maximally detailed kinetic-art manual on "correctness" versus "incorrectness" of approaches to the living artistic and sport horse INCLUDES fully detailed, accurate translations of the "equitation-bible" treatises of THREE ROYAL-COURT TRADITION, "HIGH-SCHOOL" ADVANCED CLASSICAL DRESSAGE HORSEMASTERS, currently well-known among 2-3 top-most Olympic Dressage subject-matter experts (and "loudly whispered about" ELSEWHERE, as well), yet NEVER BEFORE EVEN REMOTELY TRANSLATED INTO THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. (You be the judge of WHETHER you should read this page of ours any further, then!)

The "Original Half-Halt" As a Maximally Potent Equine Training and Horse-Riding Method Toward Ultimate "High-Schooling" of the Promising Equitation Prospect

In one non-negligible respect, the equestrian "Half-halt" has yet to be understood as a maximally powerful, psycho-physiologically (kinetically) potent, classical-equitation TRAINING WORK-METHOD FOR ORIGINAL, HISTORICALLY CORRECT HIGH-SCHOOL DRESSAGE -- which work-method renders the horse attentive, obedient, and not only helps "green-break" a young equitation prospect in the very beginning of his functional life among human keepers, but also offers a solution to all possible "problems" (or also -- kinetic and behavioral "vices") the young or adult horse may further be diagnosed to possess, including resistances, the absence of impulsion, the excess of weight on the forehand, etc. Moreover, the "Original Half-halt" happens to be applicable as an excellently powerful work method, fully capable of eliminating all "problems of the mouth" -- something which practically all horses presently exhibit, due to resistances of the mouth having emerged in resentful opposition to repeated, crass and insensitive "pulling on the reins by a human rider," while a bit has been injuriously and obliviously "lodged" at the mouth-end of a barely moving "equestrian-art sculpture of the wrong kind."

Some Definitively Proven Potencies of the "ORIGINAL Half-Halt"

The "Original Half-halt" supples, halts, equilibrates, gives lightness, collects, engages the croupe (or rear-motor kinetic complex), regulates all paces and transitions, tactfully disciplines the attention-span, and protects and preserves the impulsion of the riding horse.

Or -- in short-outline recap, the Original Half-halt is applied unto a horse (i.e., an "equitation prospect") in training, by a reasonably, yet acceptably skilled human trainer, in order to:

(1) Sensitively regulate a horse's pace or transition;

(2) Effectively (and NON-injuriously!) "collect" a horse;

(3) Fully "halt" (or "full-stop") a horse;

(4) Rebalance (or "recalibrate") a horse;

(5) Gain or regain control over a stationary or moving horse;

(6) Rekindle or bring mental concentration and attention into the mind of an inattentive or distracted equine;

(7) Address and fully correct any and all so-called "mouth problems" (i.e., "resistances of the mouth") which a horse most frequently exhibits (either due to hidden birth defects ("inborn"), or else due to previously unnoticed incidents of unskilled handling by humans (i.e., "acquired through incompetent training"));

(8) Bring an entire horse's body-weight distribution "off his forehand," and have him either equally distributing weight on all four limbs, or even moving "seated backwards, onto his haunches," if so desired by the human trainer for any specific, higher-level, artistic-equitation training purpose;

(9) Bring back happiness into a horse's emotional body (by virtue of having eliminated the discomforts of frequently gross anatomic imbalances, stiffnesses, and all the annoying, chronic pain and reflexory awkwardness those have been silently causing, all along -- regardless of how many years of suffering may have passed, to date);

(10) Provide a powerful, fully functional "SHARP EMERGENCY BRAKE" -- for cases where either lives may have to be rescued or dangerous obstacles may have to be shunned -- all "at fairly short notice."

The Universal Need Has Been Well Identified

Every riding horse must be calm, obedient and pleasant to mount. Whether a horse is intended to be used for jumping, dressage or rentable trailriding, the very fundamental principles of his usability are always the same.

With respect to any intentions to have a horse perform equitation work pertaining to the "Haute-Ecole" (i.e., "Equestrian High-School") artistic-equitation tradition, a proper "green-breaking" (or also, "breaking-in") of any respectively pre-selected and designated equine student prospect, as well as the absolute solidity and methodical coherence of his/her primary education are even more important than in the case of the more "ordinary" or "plebean" work-mount, because a solid foundation would definitely preclude and prevent the undesirable development of numerous otherwise impending faults and defects endemic to the average captive horse, all of which, if allowed to fester, would either unduly prolong -- or, in certain cases, even altogether forbid -- the more advanced education of this exceptionally intelligent and loving large animal.

Several Chronologically Consecutive Development-Phase Elements

(I) Education of the horse on the ground (before his initial "green-breaking"/"breaking-in");

(II) "Green-breaking" (or "breaking-in") of the horse by means of the work (education) on the lunge and the application of the "half-halt" (This specific educational work-stage, simultaneously, happens to be the very principle applied in correcting flaws and defects in already "started" horses, as well);

(III) Elementary work-stage (or conversationally, also: "Low-school" work (concerning itself with the confirmation of the "half-halt" in a horse's individual reflexology). (This work-stage (or "level") happens to enable equitation activities like jumping and exterior work, for example);

(IV) "Haute-Ecole" (or "High-School") work-stage (already most extensively described in written detail before this writing -- for example, by Messrs. General Baron Francois-Nicolas-Gui-Napoleon Faverot de Kerbrech, Etienne Beudant, Francois Baucher (F. Baucher), Royal Imperial Count Urusoff (Urusov), James Fillis, Cavalry Equitation Master Tikhonov, Commandant Gerhardt, General L'Hotte, et al. (the full, semantically correct English (and multilingual) parallel translations of whose directly relevant, antique-original, written equitation manual works are INCLUDED, IN THEIR UNABRIDGED, ORIGINAL-CONTENT ENTIRETY, within the overall narrative body of this 750-page "ORIGINAL HALF-HALT FOUNDATION E-BOOK," as mentioned herein-above), among several others of historically prominent academic and applied-equitation relevance hereto).

Context And Purpose of The "ORIGINAL Half-Halt"

The application of the Original Half-halt finds its absolutely central place and pivotal meaning throughout the entire continuum of a horse's life-span education as a whole -- passing through it in time like "the thread of Ariadne"-- commencing at the initial, very early "taming" and then "green-breaking"/"breaking-in" of the young horse, and unceasingly and methodically continuing -- through "Low-school" work, and into "High-school," virtually unlimited permutations of esthetic riding achievements in advanced art-equitation, if so desired, but particularly -- if so ENABLED -- by the overall inborn conformation and the specifically exhibited levels of mental/emotional innate talent with which any given individual horse in more serious advanced training may prove to have been "most conveniently blessed."

Practical Application, Progression Sequence and Intended Life-Span of The "ORIGINAL Half-Halt" As a Core Training Method

The application of the Original Half-halt is most certainly an ART, and NOT a mere "mechanistic activity." Under the intense transformational power and purity of the historically authentic, Original Half-halt as an ARTISTIC ACTION AND UNIVERSAL, LIVING AND BREATHING KINETIC-PATTERN INTENTION AND OUTGOING EVENT, the horse is but a "living pen" for the sacred, elevated esthetic purposes of that man-perfecting and horse-improving Art which the not-so-distant past has known as "Equestrian High-school Dressage."

Quite understandably -- PARTICULARLY in times like ours, the Original Half-halt must be interpreted to novices with great care, and in great hopes to be acceptably understood by the more intelligent among them, so as to be ACCURATELY AND COMPETENTLY CONTINUED AND APPLIED toward a healthier, happier, and therefore -- incomparably MORE JOY-BRINGING AND ESTHETICALLY ENLIGHTENING future for a highly perfection-aspiring activity like Classical, Academic High-School Equitation, in general. Classical Dressage -- in its extremely precious, presently almost "extinct" historically authentic continuum never was, is not presently, and luckily -- never will be any type of a "frantically disoriented, neurotic hodge-podge" of meaningless and ineffective pulls-and-pushes by heavily uncaring, "quite unhealthily competitive and inferiority-complex stricken, crass persons" seated on unhappy, "ugly" horses -- just to "look" like even THEY have "mastered an Art." (...And "all of it -- on their OWN"(?)...)

While the ENTIRE presently existent body of relevant explanatory detail in this regard happens to be quite complex and elaborately intertwined with EVERY SINGLE AREA OF A HORSE'S LIFE, TRAINING REGIMEN, and specifically attempted RIDING-MOTION TRANSITIONS, we feel it is entirely in order at least to make an honest effort to "summarize" (i.e., "briefly describe") the very basic "gist" of the kinetic action pattern of the Original Half-halt -- for the reader's initial information -- as follows:

Reins-in-hands, without ceasing contact with the mouth, and without any displacement of the rider's hands "toward his body" at all, yet -- with closed wrists (both thumb-nails facing either up or inward, toward each-other), the rider's two hands (simultaneously and in direct parallel) move in an upward-rainbow directional shape, and immediately thereafter, logically and calmly descend backward and downward (to their original starting position) -- thus causing the horse's entire neck-crest anatomical complex to elevate (i.e., "lift up" or "rise"), which weight-shifting event inadvertently results in an overall significant transfer of body-weight off the horse's forehand, and onto his haunches (backward-and-under), which, in turn, facilitates the engagement of the horse's rear-motor muscular complexes (observed as "the sinking-down of the croupe" and "the horse's rear limbs reaching much more profoundly under, frequently even beyond his center-of-gravity's vertical axis"). This overall weight-shift kinetic event, effectively, changes the entire equilibrium state of the horse's body in motion.

The required strength of application of the Half-halt is a direct function of the weight resistance encountered by the rider's hands in the horse's physiology. Depending on the degree of response one receives from the horse, either single or multiple (repeated) applications of the Half-halt action can be required, as the specific correction case at hand may dictate -- until one has obtained the desired degree of corrective success.

Two immediate and direct results of this kinetic action application by the rider upon the horse in motion are: (1) the elimination of the encountered resistance(s); and (2) the achievement of a considerably better (more profoundly felt) "lightness" and a better, more free-flowing and responsive "equilibrium" in the subject horse, altogether.

Since the Half-halt is, in principle, an instantaneous "calibrating" (readjusting) and "correcting" action, the degree of necessity for its application on any given training occasion is in direct correlation to the actual suppleness of the subject horse's body, as well as the level of success achieved immediately prior to that with the overall "placement of the horse in hand," and -- last but by far not least -- with the suppleness of his neck and his mouth.

The further a horse progresses along his individual educational trajectory of comprehension and cooperation, THE LESS FORCEFUL AND CATEGORICAL the corrective action of the Half-halt will, gradually, start feeling in the rider's hands -- because there will simply be less and less to attempt "correcting," as a well-suited horse-training regimen progresses in time. At this SECONDARY stage of successful training progression, the rider, in principle, becomes gradually enabled to "abandon" the Half-halt altogether, in favor of using ONLY HIS SEAT AND LEGS -- for directional and impulsion-change indication in the process of achieving various riding transitions, as desired.

In the more advanced stages of High-school, collected mounted work -- with the horse now well on the path of his kinetic and reflexory transformation for the better -- the very NECESSITY that a rider apply ANY Half-halt, whatsoever, gradually DISAPPEARS, as does the need for any "leg indicators" upon the horse's barrel. Ultimately, ONE STARTS RIDING ONLY WITH ONE'S SEAT -- without the need for either the Half-halt or the legs, as such. (Yes, THIS IS ABSOLUTELY TRUE, and AN ENTIRE GROUP OF EQUITATION ARTISTS IS PRESENTLY APPLYING IT ALL DAY IN ITS ADVANCED-LEVEL KINETIC PRACTICE. And no -- no one "invented this as a going myth," just to "mislead the already well-confused general public.")

In short, a "half-halt" is a universally applicable kinetic-motion correction pattern -- i.e., a certain "upward-rainbow, semi-circle"-like hand-maneuver action (the line of which follows through space "down-to-upwards-and-then-back-down"), which is simultaneously and equally performed by both of the rider's hands, and which action is quite rapid, yet does NOT result in ANY "brief ceasing of contact with the horse's mouth," whatsoever -- for the relatively short while it lasts. What is particularly important to convey to our e-reader here, if possible without any additional explanation delay at all, is that the degree of perceived and applied "force" which will thus pass through the human rider's hands to apply an intelligent and effective "half-halt" will directly depend upon the specific degree, strength and nature of the so-called "resistances of the force" or, respectively, "resistances of the weight" which this very one specific horse being ridden under this intended application has "decided to offer" to said rider -- "as is," and "today."

One student of the Original Half-halt (who also prepares and files very complex and very verbose mechanical/kinetic patent applications) has recently "humbly volunteered" to put all this into purely "technical," even more highly detailed verbal-explanation terms -- "for the more modernity-stricken among us, mere mortals" -- as follows:

"A 'half-halt' is one specifically directed and extremely effort-sensitive, kinetically well-measured, and fairly force-refined, equilibristic action of the human rider's hands, which is most sensitively, accurately, and briskly applied by said human rider upon the reins-and-bit kinetic continuum complex (while mounted on a standing or moving horse) -- and thus applied in an 'upward-rainbow' vector path of simultaneous hands-motion, directly opposing the downward and forward gravitational-fall trajectile path which the horse's kinetic center of body-weight downward orientation happens to be marking at the very instant of this hands-action application; -- thereby resulting in the horse's 'raising his neck to such a degree that all down-and-forward pulling is dissolved, ceases and desists' (i.e., the rider's hands closing, or dramatically reducing the angle which the reins have initially borne to the forward-slant (vertical-line) angle of the horse's forehead and entire central skull-line, when envisioned in forward-and-downward kinetic motion geometric-line representation terms)."...

As you can well understand, "raising the neck" of ANY horse both EFFECTIVELY and SUFFICIENTLY -- at the same time, and at that -- with the mere help of a bridle, will have EVERYTHING to do with HOW WELL and HOW READILY that one specific, unique horse happens to TOLERATE both "invasive force-application by a human rider" and "invasive weight-displacement by a human rider," at the very time of this attempted "half-halt" application by the rider's (we sincerely regret to have to point out -- most frequently, DEEPLY UNEDUCATED!) "horse-mastering" hands (...yet, hopefully -- NOT those of a "crass butcher"(?)...).

"How Much Is Enough?"

If you are well-skilled and your horse is talented, the degree of your required corrective-motion half-halt application can feel as gentle as the landing action of a golden bee seating herself onto a summer flower; but then again -- if you or your horse are NEITHER of these two good things, your half-halt can easily come out well resembling "an old-model airplane crashing full-force onto its tail." The average human has, most regrettably, fallen prey to a severely presumptuous tendency to UNDERESTIMATE the "kinetic-response acumen average" of the average bridled horse.

I could go even further -- by reminding the reader of something which a Kinetic Architect as advanced as Leonardo da Vinci has said in his time: "PERFECTION IS SIMPLICITY."

To state our typically EQUITATION-related, presently arising concern, in short: -- at the present time, most human rider hands are essentially "pulling and tugging," rather than FEELING, THINKING, EXPLORING, and barely THEN -- WITH SENSITIVITY, and WITH GREAT MEASURE, and ONLY FOR A BRIEF DIRECTION- INDICATING MOMENT -- applying the gently corrective action of the horse-cavalier's skillful hands -- historically known as the "Original Half-halt." For many centuries, this action has been felt by an entire succession of exclusively initiated horsemasters as so unquestionably SACRED and ALL-POWERFUL in its effect, that most of them have, in fact, NOT EVEN DARED DESCRIBE IT IN MERE MORTALS' WRITING, lest that should risk tarnishing it with regular, mere mortals' human imperfection, as well...

(Through the ages, and to this very day, for example, most Advanced Students of substantive relevance hereto have literally "rediscovered" and "brought" their kinetic feeling and effective hands-on application of the historically original, antique, traditionally applied "half-halt," to the legitimate and justly harsh examining scrutiny of their own formally approving Equitation Master, respectively. When their Master would truly be compelled to recognize that they have, evidently, arrived at its discovery on their own, through exploration and kinetically interactive feeling of the forces and counter-forces involved in riding and training functionally and artistically advanced horses effectively, he would customarily announce to them that they "are now members of the inner circle of a very few accepted students," and that THE ONLY way to be accepted here is to have successfully PRE-discovered the feeling and knowledge of the Original Half-halt ON ONE'S OWN, BEFORE ASKING either "WHAT IT IS," or "HOW ONE APPLIES IT.")

As you can see and appreciate, some unusually effective tools are a true honor, and a rarity at that. And as such, they should, rightfully, cause a feeling of wonder, and even of awe -- for they can, perchance, be most valuable permutations of the very "universal key" which "unlocks" anything from a horse's entire psycho-physiology, through a horse's emotional happiness, to a horse's IMPECCABLE, LOVING OBEDIENCE to his human rider. And if you believe you are "into" both FUNCTIONALLY EFFECTIVE and ESTHETICALLY BEAUTIFUL "EQUITATION," then –- normally -- the prospect of understanding and learning to apply the historically correct, kinetically effective, Original Half-halt SHOULD, by now, be making you quite "cautiously optimistic," indeed!...

"Let Your Punishment Suit His Crime"...

The very degree of applied equine-training EFFECT, and therefore -- the ultimate, at least externally registrable amount of "success" you and your advanced-level equitation prospect can (and, most certainly -- will!) achieve via the application of the "Original Half-halt," are a direct function of the DEGREE OF REFINEMENT AND GRADUAL REDUCTION (i.e., ABSOLUTE MINIMIZATION) OF THE AMOUNT OF COUNTER-FORCE which your hands have to endeavor to apply, in opposition to the specific set of kinetic resistances the horse is exteriorating through his mouth riding-contact locus. In order to dissolve and incapacitate every emerging event of resistance SUFFICIENTLY and EFFECTIVELY, you must be KIND, LOVING, CAREFUL, and most of all -- TACTFUL. Because your very "student" -- the horse lovingly surrendering today in your very hands -- happens to be innately and naturally endowed with an absolutely refined -- and LONG- PERFECTED! -- natural sense of JUSTICE -- about ANY and EVERY opposition which you -- humanly and from time to time -- may attempt to "throw back at him," in what to you is your fully "logical" attempt to have your promising horse "mastered" and/or "dressaged" by you -- his controlling human.

Every single "botched-effort" kinetic event behaviorally "accumulates" there, because it is stored "in hard memory" -- and, in the physical and bioelectric brain of a horse, that means -- FOREVER.

This is why one must vigilantly STUDY the Original Half-halt – BEFORE any presumptuously "rushed" endeavor to "apply" it onto a horse’s entire future psycho-kinetic functional profile (because that is precisely where the psycho-kinetically shaping (and frequently -- re-shaping!) power of the Original Half-halt, ultimately, goes).

In academic equitation, this basic concept of gradually and consistently REDUCING the very perceived "amount of counter-force" which it takes to ride a horse is frequently termed "the refinement of the riding aids," and its basic precepts are by far not "new" -- at least as far as the precedent, already existent body of recorded applied theory in the Art of Classical Equitation is concerned -- quite universally, and clearly -- world-wide.

It is true that, in the very beginning of the overall educational term of a "green-broke" mount, the "Half-halt" has to be applied EXTREMELY THOROUGHLY AND WITH GREAT CATEGORICITY OF PSYCHO-PHYSIOLOGICAL KINETIC COMMAND over what otherwise happens to be the invariably "inborn," default "animal instinct" initially built into the equine kinetic brain "by Mother Nature" -- since the very beginning of formalistic training of ANY and EVERY horse by a human being is the one precise, pivotal developmental moment in the overall life-span of a horse when the "Half-halt" can be effectively and successfully ingrained into the fabric of his "humanly usable" reflexology, AT ALL. However, once a minimum-required degree of good, meaningful kinetic response to the "half-halt" has been achieved in the horse's behavioral profile, by his human trainer, one must IMMEDIATELY COMMENCE REFINING BOTH THE APPLICATION-FORCE and the SPATIAL-VECTOR KINETIC DIRECTION OF APPLICATION OF THE HALF-HALT -- through a further, very patient and gradual riding-skill achievement process which the predecessors of substantive relevance in this valuable, academic-equitation historical matter have termed: "THE GRADUAL DESCENT OF THE HANDS."

"Like Father and Son" -- OR, Initial "Ground Placement" And Mastery of the Horse "On the Ground"

Just as the mastery of the controlling human being over the finished horse must be full and absolute, so the OBEDIENCE of the horse to its "human guide through physical and emotional survival" absolutely MUST be TOTAL, in order for the horse to be enabled to experience ANY DEGREE of that which a horse would term "emotional happiness" -- in the hands of none other than a controlling "human." Due to the physical and reflex nature of their inborn brains, horses are, most unquestionably, HIERARCHY-bound -- IN EVERYTHING THEY FEEL AND DO. If a human is NOT psychologically predisposed to LEADING a horse -- precisely like a FATHER leads his SON -- then chances are, that one specific human should go and find something more submissive to do, than "pushing large living things around with great disorientation and fear in his heart" can, ultimately, prove to be. Enough said.

The "ground placement" of the horse is the very first form of education which he is destined to receive from a human. It consists of familiarizing first the "colt" (or "filly"), and later -- the young mount -- with the very "human species" as such.

A horse must be rendered approachable, touchable, and accepting of being petted by human beings. He also must learn to allow to be brushed, hoof-picked, halter-led, and gradually be educated to the many meanings of the human voice. On the success or failure of this very first "taming operation" will, eventually, depend the very degree of facility which will be likely to characterize the horse's entire subsequent training.
